Why do I need a web designer?

This is a controversial but legitimate question, especially in times of drag-and-drop website platforms such as Wix, Weebly and Squarespace.

When I started out as a web designer 15 years ago, most small companies didn't have their own website. But as the internet grew, it became important for smaller companies to have an internet presence and so a web designer was commissioned to create the website.

Back then, websites were usually designed from scratch. The web designer received the relevant instructions, created a design and then developed a functional website according to the specifications. In most cases, the web designer then also managed the site for the customer, made regular changes and maintained the site.

What has changed?

Today you can register with web platforms such as Wix, Weebly and Squarespace and create your own website in just a few minutes.

So today many entrepreneurs decide to build their Internet presence themselves and thus save the costs for a web designer.

On the one hand, this is positive, as it helps many small businesses and freelancers with a tight budget, but it also has disadvantages, as it means that many websites are created that all look the same and are not effective.

So what do web designers do today?

With these changes and new technologies, web designers have had to adapt to the needs of the consumer and instead of building websites from scratch, we now offer a range of many new services that go far beyond designing and building websites.

Services can be

  • Website consulting, e.g. review and analysis of existing websites, help with SEO, website planning and needs analysis etc.

  • Project management, e.g. planning of a new website and support in cooperation with the design and marketing agency appointed by the client

  • Website design, e.g. according to the customer's needs, this can be the creation of a template on a platform or a customized design for larger and more complex websites

  • Website maintenance and support, e.g. updating texts, adding new products or images, solving problems, training, etc.

So, do you need a web designer?

Well, I would have to say yes here of course, but it really depends on their situation and needs.

  1. How large and complex should the new website be?

  2. How familiar are you with new technologies and the Internet?

  3. How long would it take you away from your actual work and what would it cost you?

  4. Do you have a strategy for your Internet presence?

  5. What could you be missing?

The experience that a professional web designer can bring to your project is often underestimated. That's why it's important to think carefully about whether you might be making a mistake if you create a website on your own.

Advantages of a web designer

  1. Many years of experience

  2. Online strategy

  3. Advice on SEO

  4. Constant help and guidance

  5. Time saving

Conclusion

Yes, you can learn everything and spend your time with online tutorials, but perhaps you can use them more wisely in your company.

Web designers are needed and important. If you want your website created correctly and effectively, then you need a specialist who will take care of your website and online strategy professionally and passionately.
